Going to Coachella Solo: Everything You Actually Need to Know

If nobody wants to come to Coachella with you, that is a genuinely terrible reason not to go to Coachella.

The festival is one of the easiest places on earth to temporarily lose your friends anyway.

You can absolutely go solo.

The bit that needs more thought is everything outside the gates.

Coachella takes place in Indio in California's Coachella Valley, and your experience can look very different depending on where you stay and how you plan to get around.

This isn't a festival where I'd casually book “somewhere in Palm Springs” and assume everything else will sort itself out.

First, understand that Palm Springs and Coachella are not the same place

This catches people.

Coachella is held at the Empire Polo Club in Indio.

Palm Springs is the famous desert city everyone associates with the festival, but the wider valley also includes Palm Desert, Indian Wells, La Quinta and several other areas.

They are not all beside each other.

That matters at midnight.

If you're choosing a hotel, look at festival transport before choosing the cutest pool.

The official Coachella system includes shuttle options, and the festival sells GA passes bundled with a three-day shuttle pass.

For a solo traveller, that is very useful.

You do not want your entire weekend dependent on finding rides after the headliner finishes.

Should you camp or stay in a hotel?

This comes down to the Coachella you want.

Camping puts you right in it.

You wake up at the festival, everybody around you is doing Coachella and the whole weekend becomes one giant event.

Hotels give you a shower, air-conditioning, a bed and a brief reminder that civilisation still exists.

I am strongly in favour of those things.

Hotels around Palm Desert and the shuttle network are popular for exactly that reason.

If you are travelling solo, the biggest downside of a hotel is that it can feel less instantly social than camping.

That is where travelling with a group fixes a lot.

You get the hotel without disappearing back to a room where you know nobody.

Do you need a car for Coachella?

Not necessarily.

If you are staying somewhere served by official festival shuttles, you can avoid driving to the festival itself.

That is ideal.

You are in the desert, parking is a mission and nobody needs a three-day argument over whose turn it is to stay sober.

The official shuttle pass exists for a reason.

If you're flying into Los Angeles, you also need to think about the much larger transfer into the desert.

LAX to the Coachella Valley is not a cute little airport hop.

Build that journey into the plan.

AWAKE's current Coachella package starts in Hollywood, includes a private transfer out to Palm Desert and brings the group back to Los Angeles at the end.

That is one less piece of Californian freeway admin to deal with.

Is Coachella awkward alone?

Inside the festival?

Not really.

Coachella has multiple stages running at once, so even groups split up constantly.

One person wants techno.

Someone else wants the giant pop headliner.

Someone has vanished to buy food and will not be seen for forty minutes.

Doing a set alone is extremely normal.

The part people worry about more is the beginning and end of the day.

Getting ready.

Travelling in.

Waiting for the shuttle.

Having people to debrief with when you get back.

That's why a group Coachella trip can be such a good middle ground.

You can still experience the festival however you want.

You just don't have to build the entire trip around yourself.

What do I need to book first?

The festival pass.

Seriously.

Don't construct an entire Californian holiday around Coachella and then casually remember the ticket.

The official Coachella site sells the festival passes, camping and shuttle products, and prices can move through tiers while availability lasts.

Once the ticket is handled, I would look at accommodation and transport together.

Not separately.

A cheaper hotel in the wrong part of the valley can become annoying very quickly.

What should you bring?

Coachella is hot, dusty and enormous.

You will walk far more than you think.

The outfit matters, obviously.

But so do shoes that aren't going to destroy your feet on day one.

Bring sun protection.

Drink water.

Have something warmer for later at night because the desert temperature can change.

Check the festival's current allowed-items rules before you pack rather than relying on a TikTok somebody made three seasons ago.

And save your phone battery.

You will need it.

Not only for photos, but for meeting points, transport and finding the person who said they were “near the big thing” in a festival containing approximately nine hundred big things.

Going to Coachella solo as a woman

The same rules apply as any major festival trip.

Know how you're getting home before you start drinking.

Keep an eye on your drink.

Set meeting points if you split from people.

Keep your phone alive.

Don't rely on magically finding your group after the headliner.

The nice thing about joining an organised group is that there are people around outside the festival too.

You're not landing in Los Angeles alone, transferring into the desert alone and coming back to an anonymous hotel every night.

For some people that makes the entire idea of going solo feel much less intimidating.

AWAKE's version of Coachella

The AWAKE TOURS Coachella tour runs for five days and includes an official three-day GA festival pass, official Any Line shuttle pass, twin-share accommodation in Palm Desert, private transfers between Hollywood and Palm Springs, welcome drinks and an AWAKE guide. The hotel is listed as roughly 20 minutes from the festival.

The point isn't to tell you how to experience Coachella once you're inside.

Go wherever you want.

See whoever you want.

It is to make the rest of the weekend easy and give you a crew to do it with.

Because waiting another year because nobody in the group chat has money right now is getting boring.
